Although a vast majority are Han Chinesethe group represents virtually all ethnic groups in China. At the end of the 19th century, the Chinese government realized that the overseas Chinese could be an asset, a source of foreign investment and a bridge to overseas knowledge; thus, it began to recognize the use of the term Huaqiao. I can be doing one thing one way in China, and then ten hours later, be doing the same thing completely differently in Australia.
From being part of one of the largest ethnic groups in Australia, to one of the smallest here in the UK, I've never been so aware of my minority status until now. More importantly perhaps, it cements the fact that we belong in Australia as much as anyone else.
